March has just begun, but German horse racing is still in hibernation shortly before the beginning of spring. While France, for example, is already firing on all cylinders and the Cheltenham Festival is just around the corner in England, there is at least one event every week in Germany.
But one race day per week throughout March, and three times in Dortmund before the grass track season finally starts on 26 March in Düsseldorf with the first Listed race (Grand Prix Aufgalopp), that is very little. And it is also much later than it used to be. We don`t quite understand why. Do they want to spare the grass races or are they afraid of fewer starters?
Spring fever can`t come up yet, when six or seven sand races in Dortmund are the only ones taking place. If you take a look at the Easter weekend, normally a festival of sport, you get misty-eyed. Whether Bremen will be able to hold the Easter Saturday is written in the stars, on Sundays everything is concentrated on Hoppegarten and the small Sonsbeck, and on Easter Monday, where usually two or three organisers appear, only Cologne dares.
Some tracks, such as Hanover or Munich, even start the racing year on 1 May, which is something we were already used to on the Isar, but which is surprising on the Neue Bult. Here, too, the question is why?
